Welcome to my website.  My name is Tim Ellis,  and I am a writer and performer of poetry.  On this website you can read free samples of my work, watch videos of me in performance,  buy books,  and contact me with enquiries about performance bookings.  But first,  let me tell you a little about myself…

Born in Berkshire in the 1960s,  I now live in Harrogate,  North Yorkshire.  When not roaming around the world bird watching or writing and performing poetry,  I somehow find time to run my own gardening business.  As a poet I divide my talents equally between page and stage.

My latest book is a collection called “Gringo on the Chickenbus”,  published by Stairwell Books in York.  It is based on journeys myself and my partner Robbie Burns have made around Latin America in recent years,  and is illustrated by Robbie.  It has been listed by Purple Patch magazine as one of the 20 best small-press poetry collections of 2011.

My first book was a collection of 40 sonnets around a theme of birds called Birds of the World in Colour,  published by Flarestack in 2003.  My poems have appeared in many magazines including The Dalesman,  Orbis and the Poetry Society’s Poetry News.  I have won 1st prize in the 2011 Huddersfield Grist Poetry Competition,  2nd prize in the National Association of Writer's Groups Competition 2013,  and 3rd prizes in the 2010 Kent & Sussex Poetry Competition and a Sentinel Quarterly competition in 2013.  I was once long-listed for the Bridport Prize.

On the performance side,  I am a well-known face at poetry slams and Open Mics throughout the North of England.   I am this year’s York Poetry Slam Champion,  a previous winner of the Ilkley Literature Festival Open Mic Competition,  and I was a contestant in the BBC Radio 4 National Poetry Slam in 2009.  In 2011 I was featured briefly on TV during the auditions of Britain’s Got Talent.
